Eugene Botes
PROFESSIONAL ARCHITECT
B.Arch (UP)
Growing up in a small industrial town in the Free State, I developed a deep appreciation for the imposing honesty and sculptural strength of industrial and Brutalist architecture. The rhythm of concrete silos and steel structures echoed the ordered geometry of the surrounding maize fields — a powerful dialogue between landscape and structure that continues to influence my architectural approach today.
This early exposure to raw, honest materials and functional engineering shaped my Modernist design philosophy. I believe in form follows function, clarity of structure, and architecture that expresses its purpose with integrity. While some may describe my work as bold or sculptural, my intention is always rooted in refined Minimalism — where proportion, light, and materiality create quiet impact.
Over time, my architectural journey expanded to include a deep admiration for the historic buildings of South Africa, particularly the restrained beauty of rural Karoo architecture. The vast landscapes, simple forms, thick walls, and humble material palettes of the Karoo continue to inform my work in the Overberg and Hermanus region.
As a professional architect in Hermanus, I strive to capture the essence of simplicity and space — designing buildings that respond to the coastal climate, mountain backdrops, and fynbos landscapes of the Western Cape. My approach merges Modernist principles with regional sensitivity, creating contemporary homes and buildings that are environmentally responsible, well-proportioned, and experientially rich.
Each project is an opportunity to create architecture that enhances both the user experience and the broader landscape — timeless, honest, and deeply connected to place.
